Question: Does light affect cut flowers?

Question : Does light affect cut flowers?
I am the accountant in a small flower shop. Does leaving lights on in a cooler affect cut flowers: carnations, alstroemeria, snapdragons, etc.

Answer #3
Some flowers are affected by light, either the flowers will turn toward it, or open and close by it.That being said... few are affected that way. Even less so when the light is electrical. Natural sunlight can diminish the longevity of the flower (by the loss of water through the leaves, petals and stem).I worked for a garden center/ florist in the metro-Detroit area and we used to always turn off the cooler lights at night. With no adverse affects. (Be sure not to turn off the cooler by mistake, or there will be adverse affects)Save on electricity and turn off those lights.I hope that this helpsGood luck-

I wouldn't think so as long as it is a low wattage and not hot.

Answer #5
Light and temperature can effect cut flowers. As a florist, I have kept many blooms in the dark cooler until time to use them. Roses and tulips are among the most popular blooms and they will both open when exposed to light and warmth. Carnations and chrysanthemums are among the best at lasting in light and warm conditions. Alstroemeria last a long time, as do snaps and coreopsis.
