Product Description Growing Information:LAVENDER, ENGLISH: Description: The aromatic, purplish blue flower spikes of Lavender are used to flavor jellies, berries, and salads. The flowers are an ingredient in the famous french 'Herbes de Provence' herb mixture. English Lavender is a compact plant with silvery foliage. This perennial grows to 2 feet tall. This semi woody plant has short branches with deep roots. The plant is as attractive to bees and butterflies as it is to people. Lavender blooms from midsummer well into fall. Length of Growing Season: Due to a slow germination period, Lavender usually requires a long growing season its first year. Temperature: This perennial is cold tolerant to zone 5, and heat tolerant to zone 8. It can be grown outside of these zones with judicious use of containers, however. Wind: Lavender's woody base and long roots enables it to withstand a fair amount of wind. Flower spikes may be damaged in particularly windy conditions. Light: Requires full sun. Soil: pH: 6.4-8.2. Prefers a dry, sandy soil. Moisture: Do not grow in damp conditions. Container Gardening: Lavender enjoys growing in pots. Garden Design: English Lavender is often used in rock gardens, or as a garden border. Harvesting: Leaves, flower buds, and flowers may be harvested and used fresh or dried. To dry, harvest the stalks when only a few blooms have not yet opened. Fragrance is best if harvesting is done early in the morning. Hang stalks in a warm, dark place with good air ventilation. When completely dry, strip flowers from stalks and store in airtight container. Special Considerations: Mulch outdoor plants in the winter. Sorry, we cannot ship plants to California. |
